Wallabies kick off Lions preparations by tackling elephant in the room

The playmaker is also keen for Schmidt to stay on but says that there will be no hard feelings if the New Zealander feels he needs to stand down.

“You know, Joe’s life away from footy is his responsibility,” Lolesio said. “So whatever Joe decides to do, it’s completely up to him. Obviously, the boys would love him to stay, but if he needs to go away, then we’ll respect that.”

The Wallabies finished their Spring tour with two wins over England and Wales and defeats to Scotland and Ireland sides that are likely to contribute the majority of the Lions squad in July.

The Wallabies showed improvements on tour in both attack and defence, particularly in their final game against Ireland in Dublinm which they lost by just three points. From the halfback’s position, White has had a close-up view of how a simplified approach to the game can pay handsome dividends.

“There’s no negatives to what he’s [Schmidt] done,” White said. “Him, Laurie [Fisher], Mike Cron, they’ve all come in and guys of that expertise have brought a wealth of knowledge with them.

“[It’s] a very simple game plan that we’re doing well and getting better at, [but] we’ve got to get better again.

“He’s just simplified the game for us, and he’s just also got an energy about him: very disciplined around the way he is and the way we’re doing things.”

While Schmidt’s future remains up in the air, Wallabies and Waratahs breakaway Langi Gleeson has potentially passed up the opportunity to play in a home World Cup after it was confirmed he will join French club Montpellier at the start of next season.

Gleeson has played 14 times for the Wallabies, featuring from the bench in all four games on the spring tour.

Rugby Australia high-performance director Peter Horne wished the back-rower well while highlighting the relative strength of the Wallabies’ stocks in Gleeson’s position.

“We recognise the opportunity that was presented to Langi overseas and wish him well as he embarks on the next chapter of his career,” Horne said.

“We are happy with the depth we have developed across the system and look forward to the huge season ahead.”
